MINIMALISM REVISITED
February-March, 2007, Tiru Gallery, Austin, Texas
“Minimalism Revisited” is about exploring that realm between 2 colours, the movement in that space. It’s about the opening and closing of doors – the slight glimpse without revealing. About creating drama – being detached and distant– emotionally removed as it is and layered with hidden meaning that can’t be readily discerned. I find it interesting that the language of the paintings changes depending upon the way the individual panels relate to each other. Each series consists of 9 panels, each panel being 10″ x 10″ except for the 3 large panels which are 30″ x 30″. Each 9 panel series can be grouped in various formations, and each of the canvases can have a differing space between them, which creates various relationships to the space they occupy on the wall. There was also an interest in exploring a relationship between Minimalism and Abstraction. I feel that you can take that flat colour field and lay an abstraction over it using the space between the 2 colours –in this case black and white. This exhibit is also about creating a specific space since the works for the exhibit were painted after the exhibition was conceived.
